2022 AFRL/AFOSR Basic Research Art of Science Showcase

To honor the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) 70 years of research innovation and to educate people around the world about the importance of basic research, we invite you to view this inaugural showcase of basic research inspired art.

Molding New Materials
Spiral Galaxy M-74: Since I worked at MIT in the early 80s, I have been exploring the combination of the creative found in science & technology with the creative in art. Most of my research is in molding light reactive materials into sculpture. At times this included electroforming metals that became molds that reproduce holograms. In recent years I am focused on hot-pressing Mylar holographic film into bas-relief wall-hung artworks. I've attached here an image of one rainbow hologram, backed with vapor deposited aluminum mirror which is then heat pressed into an 1/8" thick bas-relief. The artwork is 15" x 20" x 1/8", and changes colors with the movement of the observer. A few years ago, I was commissioned to produce and install an array of dichroic Plexiglas panels that hang from the ceiling of the new Los Alamos County Community Center on the golf course. As one walks the hallways and through the restaurant, the overhead panels change color. During the changing sunlight light of the day, beams of color are broadcast around the interior of the building. I am presently experimenting with hot pressing light reactive films for artistic and educational purposes. I am invited to lecture at U of New Mexico about Art & Science, Technology, and Engineering. My goal is to inspire young people to become more interested in a career in technology or science. My website is www.czor.com.
